Monitoring of Harmful Cyanobacterial Blooms

چکیده
Nowcasting of harmful algal blooms is important both for the public and for environmental management purposes. In the Baltic Sea, summer blooms of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria, are regular phenomena but the past years intense and widespread blooms have caused major environmental concern due to its nuisance, increased nitrogen input and toxicity. One of the most abundant species Nodularia sp. can posses a threat to animals and children. The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) has developed a monitoring application that makes use of satellite data to detect surface accumulations of cyanobacterial blooms and that assembles different essential sources of information at one website. The system has been operational since 2002 and is a service available for the three Marine Information Offices in Sweden, for public, scientists and marine environmental management around the Baltic Sea.

An overview of the interagency, International Symposium on Cyanobacterial Harmful Algal Blooms (ISOC-HAB): advancing the scientific understanding of freshwater harmful algal blooms.
There is growing evidence that the spatial and temporal incidence of harmful algal blooms is increasing, posing potential risks to human health and ecosystem sustainability. Currently there are no US Federal guidelines, Water Quality Criteria and Standards, or regulations concerning the management of harmful algal blooms. Algal blooms in freshwater are predominantly cyanobacteria, some of which...
متن کاملCyanobacterial Harmful Algal Blooms: Chapter 2: A Synopsis of Research Needs Identified at the Interagency, International Symposium on Cyanobacterial Harmful Algal Blooms (ISOC- HAB)
Evidence indicates that the incidence of cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CHABs) is increasing in spatial extent and temporal frequency worldwide. Cyanobacterial blooms produce highly potent toxins and huge, noxious biomasses in surface waters used for recreation, commerce, and as drinking water sources. The Interagency, International Symposium on Cyanobacterial Harmful Algal Blooms (ISOC-H...
متن کاملField methods in the study of toxic cyanobacterial blooms: results and insights from Lake Erie research.
Sound field methodologies are an essential prerequisite in the development of a basic understanding of toxic cyanobacteria blooms. Sample collection, on-site processing, storage and transportation, and subsequent analysis and documentation are all critically dependent on a sound field program that allows the researcher to construct, with minimal uncertainty, linkages between bloom events and cy...
متن کاملCyanobacteria blooms and non-alcoholic liver disease: evidence from a county level ecological study in the United States
BACKGROUND Harmful cyanobacterial blooms present a global threat to human health. There is evidence suggesting that cyanobacterial toxins can cause liver damage and cancer. However, because there is little epidemiologic research on the effects of these toxins in humans, the excess risk of liver disease remains uncertain. The purpose of this study is to estimate the spatial distribution of cyano...
متن کاملDesign and Application of a Surface Vessel for Autonomous Inland Water Monitoring
This article presents a novel Autonomous Surface Vessel (ASV) that was designed and manufactured specifically for the monitoring of water resources, resources that are not only constantly drained, but also face the growing threat of mass proliferation (bloom) of noxious cyanobacteria. On one hand, the distribution of these blooms in a given water body requires a surveillance of biological data ...
